Assessment 2019-20: Super Star
This was Super Star's 11th/12th grade year.
She began the year with 17.5 credits. As I've chosen to follow our state's Department of Education guidelines for high school graduation--at least as far as what constitutes a credit and how many credits are required for graduation, Super Star only needed 3.5 more credits to graduate with the state minimum. (More being recommended for a college prep high school experience.)
We started the year uncertain about what Super Star would want to do upon graduation, so we set her up for at least preparing to continue at the community college.
That goal changed over the course of the year--partly due to how much Super Star struggles with math and partly due to the changes COVID-19 has wrought upon education.
She did begin Saxon Algebra 1. She worked diligently at it, and she learned what she worked at. However, she needed almost constant tutoring with me. With interruptions several times a day to take care of Brother's emergencies, we could not keep up the level of work she needed to make progress. It was with aching hearts that we put the algebra book away and pulled out the Life of Fred pre-algebra books that she could do independently just to keep active what skills she does have.
In addition, Super Star battled her own mental health crises this school year.
She has come out the other side, and she is bright and hopeful now.
In her academic life, she soldiered on to the best of her abilities, and Super Star really earned this early graduation.
She worked 2 shifts each week at Freddy's through the entire school year.
She attended seminary every morning until COVID-19 shut down the in-person program, and then she completed the home-study/Zoom meeting program that finished out the year. Seminary covered the New Testament during Fall Semester and The Book of Mormon Spring Semester.
She participated in Morning Meetings.
She danced and sang with American Rhythm.
PE for Super Star consisted of video workouts, walking, and bicycling.
We (like most folks in this country) endured a great deal of uncertainty, but in the end, Super Star earned the following credits;
0.5--Classic Literature--reading and participating in our classics book club (The Book Thief, The Old Man and the Sea, The Outsiders)
1.0--English 11--The Good and the Beautiful High School Language Arts 2 (Symposium)
1.0--Ancient Literature and Cultures--Omnibus I readings, discussion, and writing (Symposium)
0.5--Algebra A--Saxon and Life of Fred
1.0--Health and Nutrition--Apologia
1.0--American Literature--Apologia
0.5--World Geography--The Good and the Beautiful High School Language Arts 1 & 2 (Symposium)
0.5--Religious Studies III--(Morning Meeting content)
0.5--Art: Drawing with Charcoal and Pencils--The Good and the Beautiful High School Language Arts 2 (Symposium)
0.5--P.E.
-------
7.0 credits
Super Star graduated with 24.5 credits on her transcript.
It is a transcript heavy with language arts (7.5), respectable with social sciences and science (3.5 and 3, respectively) and light on math and foreign language (2.5 and 1, respectively).
It is a custom education that will be a blessing to her and allow her to be a blessing to others.
She knows how to learn.
She is registered for a 7 week phlebotomy training course starting in September. Her hope is to excel in this training, find a satisfying job, and work until she can afford a car of her own and save for some dream travel plans.
At that point, she may choose to further her health science training or not . . . her future is wide open.
I'm ever so proud of her!!
