Assessments 2025-26: Little Princess

My gosh!  This girl of mine is so cute!

 This was the school year that depression took over her life.

Any work she did with me or for CAP or for church or for her job was done beautifully well--continuing to prove to me that she is incredibly capable.

Most of the work that she had to do independently was procrastinated until it was too late to complete this school year.  

We had meeting after meeting after meeting trying to find ways to help her overcome her inertia, but nothing worked.  

Finally, we headed to the doctor where she was diagnosed and prescribed meds.  

At her follow-up appointment last week, she told the doctor she was feeling much better, and she passed the depression screening.

However, she experienced a trauma this summer that she must now process.

So she's starting therapy.  

We've completed all of the intake forms and meetings, so she should be assigned a therapist and start sessions any time now.

With the other high schoolers, Little Princess completed:

(1.0 credit) Eastern Hemisphere--a history/geography course based on the text Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere that included note-taking, videos, discussions, quizzes, essay writing, and research

(1.0 credit) Literature--we read, discussed, researched, and wrote about the following books:

        

        Otto of the Silver Hand -- Howard Pyle

        Julius Caesar -- William Shakespeare 

        A Girl of the Limberlost -- Gene Stratton-Porter

        Education of Little Tree -- Forrest Carter

        Romeo and Juliet -- William Shakespeare 

        A Separate Peace -- John Knowles

        Great Expectations -- Charles Dickens

        A Midsummer Night’s Dream -- William Skakespeare

        The Screwtape Letters -- CS Lewis

On her own, she completed:

(0.5 credit) Survey of American Government--a civics course based on the text American Government 101 that included research and short-essay writing

This totals 2.5 credits completed for the school year.

Because she accumulated 17.5 credits during her 9th and 10th grade years, she ended 11th grade with 20 credits, which still puts her above average for her same-grade peers.

Courses that she worked on but did not complete:

        Teaching Textbooks: Pre-Calculus

        Novare: Physics

        Essentials in Writing: Grade 11 Writing and Grammar

        Khan Academy:  AP Computer Science

She will complete these classes during the 2026-27 school year.

This year Little Princess:

        *took the ACT 3 times and worked her way to a highly competitive score,

        *received credit for a full year of early morning seminary, 

        *completed her driving practice and got her license, 

        *paid for all of her camps, trainings, and travel expenses herself,

        *danced for American Rhythm (13 years!), 

        *served as class president for her Young Women's group at church,

        *was so much of a leader in her Civil Air Patrol Squadron that she is currently Cadet Captain, and

          *was hired for her first out-of-the-home job at Smoothie King (she is a favorite employee). 

And she did all of this while suffering from MDD.

Accepting this diagnosis and its attendant prescription for medication closed several doors to Little Princess' future dreams.

She is currently not eligible to attend the US Air Force Academy.

She is currently not eligible to join any branch of the military.

She currenly not eligible to become a pilot.

BUT . . .

She learned a great deal at her camps this summer about other options that are still open to her.

We are exploring those options with optimism about her future.
