More Summer Camps

 The 3 big boys got home from Boys' Camp yesterday.  

(No pics have been shared yet.)

They are full of stories about fishing, touring a cave system, river rafting, chair soccer (broke one of our camping chairs!), devotionals, and not showering even once.

Those of us who stayed at home kept busy with Little Mister, The Munchkin, and Sugar Bear who came to spend a day with us here and there.  

We didn't read together while the big boys were gone.

We're reading a wonderful book called The Beatryce Prophecy by Kate DiCamillo!!!  We started it before the boys left, and we're finishing it up now that they're home.

While they were gone the remaining 3 kids watched a lot of the Percy Jackson series (Lola has been rereading The Lightning Thief) and some Harry Potter movies (Lola has been rereading that series as well).  They did a lot of personal reading--Ladybug likes teen romance novels, and Baymax has been working his way through Fablehaven for the third time.

I'm just about organized for the new school year.

But I haven't written any of my assessments for the 2025/26 school year! 

Prior to Boys' Camp, Mister Man and Beowulf were able to attend CAP Encampment.  And Little Princess worked at Encampment on the Standards and Evaluation team--she did inspections and testing!

The other Blackhawks were on a mission, so there wasn't room for cadets to fly.

Volleyball is a daily activity, and they turn it into a training session with lots of form and procedure!

I don't know what they're doing. 
I'll find out stories when she gets home.

Ladybug is officially a member of CAP now, and she was so happy to try on her uniform!

She and Brother are hoping to attend winter Encampment in Kansas.  

It's super, super hot here at home.  We're hiding out from the heat most of the time.

Kids have begun to ask when school is going to start.

Baymax said, "I don't really want school to start because of the work, but I miss the schedule of school days."

I think he spoke for most of the kids!

And that's why I missed a week of posting about our homeschool. I was so sick. So. Sick. A Week, Briefly (Summer is not over)

Last August I was not ready for school to start, but I did it anyway because I thought I should. And in September I had mental health crisis of the most serious kind. This August I am not ready for school to start. And I'm honoring that. However, I am ready to document brief moments of the beautiful learning that my kids engage in when I'm not running school. This week Rose Red is in Florida at a surfing camp.  She's with a sweet friend.  I could not be happier for her to have this experience away from home, at the beach, out-of-doors, physically active, and just plain cool. As far as I'm concerned, this is a quarter of a credit of P.E. The rest of us are at home.  My teens are reveling in their last days of bizarre teen sleeping schedules before early morning seminary begins next week. A Week, Briefly (In Which the Week Gets Rough)

Sunday We made "gingerbread" houses after church. Then we went for a walk.  Then we started reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever .  I know the story of Christ's birth should be my favorite Christmas story, but it's really The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It's about discovering the power and love of Christ's birth, so that's pretty good, isn't it?  Monday Lots of folks are on Christmas break, but my big girls still have seminary until the 21st, and I don't really know what to do with the kids that prefer routine to break, so we're sticking with our school routine until inspiration comes. Honestly, my crew NEED to be outside a lot, and they NEED structure to their days, so dumping it all in favor of "relaxing" into holiday activities is an absolute joke. Our summer days were long and free, but we had the luxury of 10 hours of outdoor play available to us then. Right now we're looking at 1-2 hours of successful out...
