Surgery for Mom
Thank you to those who posted words of sympathy and encouragement for me. My heart goes out to you in your struggles as well. We're all doing our best!
I'm seeking a new blogging routine because my Sundays are full with my church assignment in the leadership of the children's organization--we call it Primary. That's why my blogging has been hit-or-miss for the past few months. I used to write on Friday afternoons, but those aren't as free as they used to be either.
So I'm thinking.
Today I'm somewhat handicapped as I type one-handed.
I had carpal tunnel surgery this week!

(Recovery is turning out to be harder than anticipated.)
It is a profound relief to be free of my symptoms that, in spite of my best efforts, had increased their effect over the years to 100% of the time. And I have great hope for the future. It's just the healing that is frustrating.
I'm practicing patience.
I'm practicing patience.
I'm practicing patience.
And I'm surrounded by people who help me constantly.
***2 days later***
Yes, they help me, but I'm still so tired even though it's only my hand that is healing. It's taking all of my strength, so I'm needing rests and naps and early bedtimes (Ha! I always need early bedtimes!)
The kids and I are still doing our best through school.
We finished The Jesus Storybook Bible and started our 10 volume Bible story set.
We worked on the first paragraph of The Family Proclamation for January, and we've now started the second.
The teens and I just finished A Separate Peace this morning. We also finished our textbook chapter on Russia. I'm reading Breaking Stalin's Nose to all 7 kids as a finale to the unit.
The younger kids and I also read a wonderful book about life in Leningrad during WWII called Burying the Sun.
We're also almost done with The Princess and Curdie--I tried to finish it last night, but I was having "pillar pain" in my hand, and I was almost crazy with hurting. I had to stop before we finished, and tonight the kids have church activities, so I hope to finish it Wednesday evening.
We finished our chapter on the respiratory system, and we're about 1/3 of the way through the one on the circulatory system.
Brother finished pre-algebra and has started algebra. I'm worried because he failed his first quiz. (I deleted it and let him take it again the next day.) But he's soldiering on doing his best to work until he gets the problems correct.
I hope that correlates with understanding the material.
We were in the path of the snow and extreme cold that hit the country a week or so ago. The kids had a blast sledding, playing snow football, and generally wallowing in the cold and snow until they were ready to come in for popcorn and hot chocolate.
We have burned so much wood that Sir Walter Scott had to forage for some more!
Wood chopping satisfies a primal need in my boys.
I tried to give haircuts to the man and boys in my life before my surgery, but I wasn't able to. Once surgery happened, it became out of the question for me to do so.
Little Princess stepped in and helped at least get Mister Man's hair away from his ears before a CAP meeting.
It was a bizarre few minutes of feeling simultaneously proud and redundant!!!!

Best wishes for a restful recovery! I remember when Brianna wanted to learn haircutting skills. There were plenty of brothers around for her to practice on. :)
ReplyDeleteI’m teaching California history this year, so I’m getting to read Island of the Blue Dolphins for the first time. I’m sure you guys have read it; you’re so great about saturating your kids in good books!
