Two Weeks, Briefly (5/21&28/18)

We are home from California--over 3600 miles driven with all 14 of us in our van.




We are tired.

We are happy to have helped Grammie and Grandpa celebrate 50 years of marriage at a casual, backyard party hosted by the R-- cousins!

The extra girl is Cousin J-- 

And we are happy to have helped celebrate the anticipated birth of great-grandbaby #1 into the family.  (He's going to be named after Grandpa!)

Cousin J-- is going to be an auntie in late August!


We did hit the beach.  It was too cold to go to the beach, but when you drive 1700+ miles, you don't skip the beach just because the breeze is a little chilly.  We lasted maybe an hour before we put on jackets and headed to the shelter of Grammie's house for would-be picnic lunch.


A guy came up the beach and hit on all four of my daughters at once--while Sir Walter Scott and I were sitting not 8 feet away watching his every move.  Rose Red held her own, but the other girls froze.  Eventually he gave up.






We swam in our cousins' pool.






We stayed up too late at night reminiscing.





We ate too much.


We are glad to be home.

The mulberries ripened while we were gone!






And the lettuce bolted.  I cleared out the lettuce bed to make way for tomatoes, and the kids helped me clean the last homegrown salad.


We'll eat it for dinner tonight.

Next week the teens are all leaving town--Rose Red for the Bahamas, and the other teens for Girls' Camp.  Nature Angel and Little Princess will run their at-home camps for the littlest ones, and then we'll settle into summer.

    What a wonderful trip. What happy smiles on the kids. That pool looks amazing...imagine having that in your backyard. My kids occasionally long for an above ground pool, but they look like to much work to me. We are always to busy to really take advantage of it anyway.

    Wow you've had quite the trip. Miss 17 and I are currently about 840 miles from home - but we cheated a flew part of the way and then bussed the rest. I can't imagine all the driving. Hope you had a wonderful time - it looks like the kids did.

    I'm glad you had a good trip. I think a big change in the summer is really important so you want to get back to things in the fall.

    I'm always taken aback at how exquisitely beautiful the children are... Relieved that you are all safe and sound after all those miles... Continued prayers for everyone to be held safe in God's hands as the travels and experiences continue...

    Wonderful pictures! What an amazing swimming pool! Glad you made it back safe you must be exhausted! It is 1200 miles for us to go back “home” to NY. We have not made the drive in 10 years.

This is my crew last summer--the day we said goodbye to Pixie as she headed off to college. I actually have all 12 of my children home right now. Rose Red is nearly 20, graduated from our homeschool a year and a half ago, lives at home, and is working as a server at Applebee's as she tries to understand what it means to be an adult. Pixie is newly 18, graduated from our homeschool almost a year ago, is a dance major at BYUI, and is spending her off-track semester working full-time in the 1-year-old room at a daycare. These two still are part of our family days, and their schedules directly impact the rest of us, but I am no longer responsible for their day-to-day educational needs. Review: Drive Thru History® – “The Gospels”

We are total Drive Thru History® fans around here.  We discovered Dave Stotts and his awesome video series years ago, and we've watched them enthusiastically ever since.  The videos are informative, interesting, and funny, so we jumped quickly at the opportunity to review the newest series:   Drive Thru History® – “The Gospels." And it definitely makes the grade. Because this new series focuses on the gospels, we opted to make watching it the focus of our Family Home Evening on Sundays. The timing of our review period was such that we were enjoying the lessons in the weeks leading to Easter. How cool is that!?! The Second Week

This week was a lot like last week. We didn't make any progress introducing new subjects, but we got better at what we are already doing. We got better at listening to music--3 times this week!  We don't much like Bach's St. Matthew Passion, but we are quite fond of the Brandenburg Concertos .  (This could be my influence, as I've always preferred a concerto to a cantata.) We got better at reviewing our bulletin boards. (Now I need to get new board information ready!) We finished How to Behave and Why on Monday, and we read this book several times during the week.  Along with our readings, we had discussions about the lessons taught and the values of the culture represented in the story.  I also began to pause in places and turn over the storytelling to the kids. For zoology, we watched a great video about elephants .   And we started this book. We're only 30-ish pages into it, but we're really curious about where it's going. I assigned the kids to researc
